How quickly time flies! It’s been almost a week, since Jamie and I left for New York. I just can’t find the time to give my life’s events the proper wordsmithing in my journal like I used to. I’m going to skim over the events and hope to capture the zeitgeist of the weekend.
Jamie and I left for New York on Friday night around 7 PM. We made pretty good time and eventually made it to Joel’s place around midnight. Robby was already there, because he took a plane (cheater!). The four of us went out to find something to eat. We went to a small diner and had a fairly decent meal. We returned home and watched a bunch of episodes of Dave Chappelle’s Show on DVD.
We slept in, got ready, then headed out for breakfast around 3 PM. Joel found this really great place that served scrumptious breakfast food at decent prices. I think all of us had the biscuits & gravy and a side of bacon (or some derivative of that). It was good stuff. The only suck thing was my $5 orange juice and Jamie’s teency-weency, non-refillable Pepsi.
Afterwards, we headed to Janna’s place, where we met one of her pals and listened to music, while Joel surfed the net to find things for us to do. We left there and took the subway to a bowling alley located in a bus terminal (that sounded so ghetto at the time). It turned out to be a perfectly normal bowling alley. We bowled, and everyone did pretty well. The big suck thing is that it cost us $20 each to bowl two games (plus the $7 pitcher of Coke). Geez.
We did a lot of walking and subway ridin’ and eventually found ourselves in Time Square. Robby hadn’t been there before, so it was fun. I took some pictures (see below) in roughly the same spot I photographed Megan for the Heroine CD (Megan was a cool photographer chick I met at a college newspaper convention in NY in 1996—we ditched the conference classes and hung out all day together instead). At some point during our wandering, Robby noticed a shop called Filth Mart. I didn’t know it at the time, but that store is owned by Drea de Matteo from ‘The Sopranos.’ I wish now I had stopped in—in the off-chance she was there.
We stopped in the ESPN Zone, where we went to the top floor and played a bunch of sports-related video games. We each bought a $20 card and spent it all in about two hours. The most fun games were the racing games that we could all play against each other. I tried that damn horsey ride, too, and it wore me out.
We were hungry, so we ate at some sushi place. Janna met us there, then we went searching for a cool karaoke place. We drove here and there and everywhere and just could not find a decent karaoke venue. Eventually, we ditched the idea and headed back to Brooklyn. We bar-hopped the rest of the night and had a lot to drink. Probably the best place we went to was the first bar, which was well-lit, and we had a booth to sit at and talk. There was this guy, Stu, who was totally smashed and kept walking back and forth past us. Jamie and I were in the aisle and almost took bets on who Stu would spill his drink on. Everybody had a good laugh at Stu for about an hour, especially when he tried to hit on chicks. Speaking of which, I made a beeline to the jukebox, when I saw a really attractive girl having a hard time selecting songs. She was very friendly and asked me to help her out. After we were done, unfortunately, she headed back and sat down beside her boyfriend. Oh, well. There was another cute brunette, but… Whatever. We were there to celebrate with Robb-A and his upcoming wedding.
There were some other semi-noteworthy happenings at the other bars. For my own memory purposes, I’ll simply randomly mention them… Girl at the entrance to one bar inviting us in because she thought Joel was cute. Guy I stood in line with to the bathroom—we turned away some girls who wanted to cut in line (and batted their eyes to do it). We told them to get in line like everyone else—the guy said, “You girls want equality—well, you got it!” The bartender “cutting me off” (in reality, she ran out of hard cider). Me trying to drink a Guiness and giving up.
The cool thing about New York is that last call is at 4:30 AM or so. We didn’t last that long, though—we went home around 3:30 AM. We were out immediately once we hit our beds.
Robby got up early, and Joel took him to the airport around 9 AM. Jamie and I didn’t bother showering and headed back to Virginia once Joel returned. And that was that. It was a pretty low-key weekend, but I had fun, and I hope Robb-A had fun, as well.
General Commentary…
New York chicks are hot—especially the hipster chicks in Williamsburg/Brooklyn. They also seem to be friendlier than those in D.C. Everyone, in general, seemed friendlier in Williamsburg—like they would take care of each other. Everyone dressed the same there, but it was a pretty cool style. I still wouldn’t want to live there (because of the dirty streets, the horrible traffic, and all that freakin’ walking), but it’s a cool place to visit.
