There’s been a major shift in my friendship with Allie in the last five days.
On Tuesday night, our kickball game was rained out, so we went to the Vienna Inn to hang out. Rather than do my normal floating from table to table, I sat and talked with Allie the entire time. It was an enjoyable few hours. Rather than wait a whole week to talk again, we swapped IM screen names.
As soon as I got online at work the next day, we began an IM conversation that lasted the entire 8 hours. We did it again on Thursday. I invited Allie to a Nextel happy hour at Ned Devine’s after work, and she accepted. She met my co-workers, but we spent most of the time away from the group, talking at the bar and drinking Smithwicks. Before leaving for Bible study, she invited me out for some 80’s dancing at the Black Cat on Saturday. I accepted.
The next morning, we were online again, but due to our lack of productivity the previous two days at work, we set up “boundaries” in our friendship. We didn’t IM all day, but when it came time to leave work for the weekend, we decided we should hang out that night.
We went to Adams Morgan for some comedy improv at the DC Arts Center. We laughed a lot and had a great time. We went back to her place afterwards, and I got the tour of her awesome home. Her sister and other roommate were there, so we drank, talked and laughed for some time.
The following evening, I went back to her place and we—along with her sister—headed to the Black Cat. I hadn’t been to the Black Cat in over two years, so I was pretty excited to go. There was Brit Pop playing upstairs and classic 80’s playing in the downstairs room. First, we went upstairs to see their friends, who were celebrating a birthday. I didn’t like it upstairs, because the dance floor was too wide open and brightly lit. I broke off from the group and headed downstairs. I enjoyed it down there. The music was great and the setting was more favorable for dancing. Allie and her sister eventually came down, and we spent the next few hours dancing non-stop. It was so much fun. Everyone around us wanted to join us, but the girls kept them from entering our little triangle. I wasn’t accustomed to the new 3 AM closing time, so by 1:30 I was ready to go. The girls were, too, so we headed off, and Allie drove us home.
Allie’s sister went straight to bed, but Allie and I stayed up and watched Napoleon Dynamite. That was fun. We quoted the entire movie and laughed a lot. By the time the movie was over, it was 4 AM. I debated whether to crash on her couch or go home. I decided to go home.
After five straight days with Allie, I now have a day off to reflect. I don’t want to be impulsive, or anything… But sometimes things seem so perfect, it’s hard not to get excited. Tomorrow the IM’s will begin again, and Tuesday we’ll meet for kickball. I’m looking forward to what the next week brings.
